Insurers have confirmed that there are indeed cases where hospitals take advantage of a person having insurance to perform unnecessary tests.
"We've had such cases, but they are isolated and not frequent. However, we do acknowledge these expenses and pay for them. It is also possible that in the specific case, this was the hospital's protocol," commented Lili Stoyanova, Director of Sales of Domestic Markets at Euroins, to "Telegraph."
To avoid unnecessary tests that could cause you to lose an entire day of your vacation lying in a medical facility, you should first contact the assistance company that the insurer works with.
They provide 24-hour assistance and direct the client to the appropriate medical facility.
This way, unnecessary procedures can be avoided, explains Stoyanova. Of course, in emergencies such as a heart attack or car accident, where every second counts in saving a life, you should first call emergency services.
Once admitted to the hospital, the patient's relatives should then contact the assistance company.
According to Stoyanova, travel insurance, which covers medical expenses for acute illness or accidents abroad, is becoming increasingly popular, especially after the surge in travel following COVID. For air travel, the policy also covers risks such as loss and theft of luggage, flight cancellations, etc.
